As an SBO, one of the milestones you will always remember about your small business is the first person you ever hired. Many operations start out as one-person shops, bootstrapping it long enough to get going. So, when the time comes to hire an employee, a corporate family is born.
The obvious challenge is attracting talent without the kinds of salary and benefits packages they might find at bigger companies. While compensation is important to everyone, it is not the most important factor in employee happiness and satisfaction.
Research and studies from the likes of SHRM, Harvard Business Review, Gallup, and many others consistently show that salary is not the highest priority for a majority of employees. Some of the factors that rank higher include work-life balance, flexible hours, recognition and appreciation of their work, ability to grow and learn, meaningful contribution to a team effort, and a positive, supportive company culture.
Many of those things have low cost, and some are free. So, don’t think of your size as a limitation – it can actually be your secret weapon in the kind of people you want. Highlight how team members can have a direct impact on the business's success – something they’d lose in a corporate maze.
“This is your chance to be a vital part of building and shaping a company's future.”
You can then tie that individual contribution to performance-based incentives, so you can cover some additional compensation, but under a structure you know you can afford, because if the business does well, then the employees do well.
An SBO coach can help you solidify a hiring and recruitment regimen tailored to your unique small business.
